2008-09 Footsteps Dance Theater Company
|
The Footsteps Dance Theater is a pre-professional program designed for the purpose of providing promising
dancers ages 7-18 with accelerated training, additional performing opportunities, and occasions to learn from dance
professionals in addition to the Footsteps staff.
We developed the Footsteps Dance Theater for dancers with talent, drive, and commitment. Not all dancers possess
all three qualities; the Footsteps Family Dance Center offers recreational classes in all genres and all levels to
accommodate non-company dancers. The company program places demands on both the dancers and their
families, requiring many hours of practice both in and out of the studio, extra expenses besides tuition, and
sacrificing other activities. Ours is a rigorous course of study, but it is not without rewards, of course!
For example, spending so much time together builds relationships that can last a lifetime. Company dancers enjoy a
sense of pride over the accomplishments they achieve together with their team. They learn the value of hard work
and sacrifice, and build character as they learn to deal with the highs and lows of competition. They benefit from
feedback from teachers from around the country at conventions and master classes. And this is just the tip of the
iceberg!
Acceptance into the Footsteps Dance Theater company is by audition only. We hold auditions in May, so that we
can learn our Company choreography over the summer and have maximum practice & technique time once fall
classes begin.
Auditions are a 2-day process. On the first day at what is called the “Prep Day,” dancers will be tested in basic,
standard skills such as splits, leaps, and turns, which can be found in most competition dances. After that,
combinations will be taught by Footsteps staff members; there is a separate combo for each age group and dance
form. All dancers will be given instructions as to what criteria the judges are looking for and how the moves are to
be performed.
Dancers will then have a week to practice at home before returning for "Audition Day." On Audition Day, dancers
will be divided into small groups of 3 or 4 and asked to perform the combinations that they learned. Judges will be
looking for things like technique, flexibility, memory, confidence, and stage presence. Our judges are the Footsteps
instructors, as well as one dance professional from outside of FFDC to make sure we stay as objective as possible.
Dancers who are not selected for the company program will be told exactly what to work on in their recreational
classes to prepare them for next year’s auditions.
The cast list is posted both at the studio and online on this very page the Tuesday after Memorial Day. Results are
final. We are happy to share with families the reasons why we placed their dancer where we did, but because we
have their best interests in mind when we make our decisions, to alter those in response to complaints would be to
give you less than our best, which we just won't do!
All Company dancers and their parents are given an FDT Packet/Contract prior to auditions. This packet contains
every detail of what's involved with being a Company dancer at Footsteps, including the tentative schedule for the
coming year's events. Replicating real life, participation in the Footsteps Dance Theater company program requires
that both dancers and a parent sign a contract. By signing the company contract, the dancer and parent are stating
that they have been informed of, understand, and accept the terms of the FDT company program and are
committing to abiding by them and fulfilling all duties that come with being involved with company. It helps to ensure
that both dancers and their families understand the level of commitment that we expect from company kids and the
time and financial responsibilities that involvement with FDT places on families. We abide very strictly by the
contract and expect our Company dancers and their families to do so as well.
We consider the Footsteps Dance Theater Company to be a dance family, one big unit comprised of dancers of
various ages, skill levels, and dance forms. Not everyone performs every dance form, but only those that they
audition for and are cast in. The dance forms represented include ballet, pointe, jazz/lyrical, tap, and hip hop.
There are 3 age divisions within the Footsteps Dance Theater company:
Junior (ages 7-11)
Teen (ages 11-14)
Senior (ages 14+)
Our Tap companies and Jazz/lyrical companies follow these age divisions. The Jazz/lyrical companies have a
separate class each for jazz and for lyrical, and they learn a different dance in each. However, because we
structure the jazz class and lyrical class to complement each other, dancers are required to be in both.
There are 3 exceptions to these age divisions. Pointe company is comprised of dancers whose pointe skills merit
company involvement, regardless of age. Ballet company is comprised of dancers who are accelerated in their
ballet training but who are not yet ready to perform on pointe, or who do not take pointe; age is not a factor in
ballet company so much as ability. The same is true of Hip Hop company.
Modeled after professional ballet companies, the Footsteps Dance Theater company is structured in a hierarchy
based on skill level, artistic expression, and experience. Every rung on the ladder is important to the overall
success of the company. Each age division, Junior, Teen, and Senior, as well as Pointe, Ballet, Hip Hop, and Tap,
contains understudies, company members, and soloist/duet/trios. Our FDT Packet/Contract details the
responsibilities and limitations of each level of involvement.
Solos, duets, and trios are called "SDT's." These are given at the discretion of our staff; students do not get to
choose whether or not they receive one, nor do they have a say in the dance form or fellow dancers they are cast
with. We are once again happy to share with families the reasons behind why we cast kids as we do, but no
changes will be made as a result of these discussions.
The entire Company does dance together in our Production Number. This is our opening number in each of the
Spring Concert performances.
The following companies are required to take 2 ballet classes per week: Jazz/lyrical, Ballet, and Pointe.
If a dancer is only in Tap or Hip Hop company, the requirement is one ballet class per week.
In addition to ballet, FDT dancers in Jazz/Lyrical also take one 75-minute jazz class and one 75-minute lyrical class
per week. Tap company dancers take one 60-minute tap class per week; Hip Hop company also takes one 60-
minute hip hop class each week. Pointe company dancers take one 45-minute pointe technique class, one 30-
minute pointe variations class, plus a separate 45-minute Pointe company rehearsal per week. Ballet company
dancers have one 45-minute Ballet company rehearsal per week.
Footsteps Dance Theater’s soloists, duets, and trios (SDT’s) practice with their instructor every other week in a 30-
minute lesson. On weeks when the dancer(s) do not have SDT rehearsal, they are encouraged to sign up for
practice time in the studio; a list of available times is posted weekly. This policy places the burden of practicing
where it belongs—on the dancer—and frees up the schedule so that we can extend featured dance experiences to
more dancers than weekly lessons would allow.
Company dancers are permitted 2 absences per trimester. We have 3 trimesters per dance year, each 3 months
long. Seniors in high school get one extra absence per year. Consequences for excessive absences are detailed
in the FDT Packet/Contract, and we do enforce them! There is simply no substitute for practicing with your team,
and the lessons of accountability and fulfilling your commitments are invaluable to adult life.
FDT attends 3 regional competitions per year. These competitions are usually held in the spring, and they often
last the entire weekend, from Friday evening until sometimes late Sunday night. Regional competitions will be
mostly located in Columbus. Occasionally we may travel to other Ohio cities like Dayton, Cincinnati, Cleveland,
Youngstown, or Warren.
The Footsteps Dance Theater attends 1 national competition every other year. Dancers must qualify to perform at
nationals by scoring within a certain range at one of the regional competitions. The national competition takes
place in the summer, usually between very late June and the middle of July; the competitions last from 4-7 days
and may include master classes for the dancers to enjoy as well. Since most nationals are held in cities outside of
Columbus, and often outside of Ohio, hotel costs and travel expenses are involved. We will always stay within 1
day's driving distance for nationals.
On alternate years between nationals, FDT attends a summer dance intensive. These are usually a week long
and involve taking classes from teachers from around the country, learning a variety of dance forms and styles,
and sometimes culminating in a final performance at the end of the week. Often other activities unique to the area
are included, such as seeing a theater show, spending a day at a theme park, etc. Summer dance intensives may
be within or outside of Ohio. These are invaluable bonding and learning experiences that we simply cannot
duplicate here at Footsteps.
FDT attends 1 dance convention per year. The time of year and location vary depending on the convention, but it
will always be within the state. Like competitions, conventions can be expected to run the entire weekend.
Conventions are focused on classes in many different dance forms; dancers are expected to participate in all
classes, even if it requires them to try a form of dance they have never studied before.
All Company dancers are required to participate in 3 in-studio workshops per year. We bring in guest artists in
dance and dance-related fields to expand our students' understanding of teaching and dancing styles, their own
physiology and staying healthy, and the possibilities of other careers in the dance field besides just performing.
Eight workshops are offered each season, and they are held on select Saturdays from 4:30-6:00 pm.
Because dancers learn about their art form through their eyes as well as their bodies, and to teach them to
support those who dance for a living, we provide an opportunity for FDT dancers to attend one professional
performance each fall. This event is optional, but many dancers enjoy taking advantage of our group's discounted
ticket price.
Other fun Company activities include the Sleepover, which is a lock-in in February when we embellish costumes
and props, enjoy a potluck dinner and breakfast, and play fun games that endear the dancers to each other. In
the spring we have offsite rehearsals at the Ohio Theater in preparation for competition where we can spread out
and use our largest props with ease; these rehearsals are exciting, because it means the first competition is
drawing near! Each Company dancer is assigned a Big or Little Sis to love, encourage, help, and give special
attention to throughout the dance year. We also celebrate the accomplishments of the season and kick off the
next season with a Company picnic or banquet in the summer. This event always involves great food, games, and
our famous Goofy Awards!
We work hard to keep Company involvement as financially feasible as possible, but it's just simply an expensive
venture despite our best efforts! We present the financial projections for the season in the FDT Packet/Contract
prior to auditions, so when a family commits to our Company program, they have as complete a picture as
possible of what they're getting themselves into. We also go over these costs at the early May Parents Meeting,
where the next season's Company plans are discussed before kids audition. These projections are as accurate as
we can make them with the info we have at the time the FDT Packets/Contracts are printed, so costs may be
subject to change slightly.
Because FDT dancers spend so much time at the studio, and because of the extra financial burden that company
events place on them, the Footsteps Family Dance Center offers company families additional discounts on tuition.
The FDT tuition chart details these discounts. Any family with a dancer in the company program receives the
discounts on this chart; siblings’ and parents’ classes receive company discounts too, in appreciation for their
commitment to and support for the studio. Having a dancer in company does affect the entire family!
Company tuition is figured on the number of hours that company families dance at Footsteps per week. The more
hours that family members spend in class here, the greater the discount per hour. Please inquire in the Footsteps
office for details on the Company Tuition Chart.
Each Company dancer is required to purchase team warmups, a Company leotard, and a Company T-shirt, all of
which distinguish us and give the dancers a sense of unity when we dance out in the community. In total, these 3
items cost around $180-200, and are all custom-designed just for FDT. These items are ordered in September.
For competitions, we have a makeup kit, rhinestone earrings, tights, and sometimes special undergarments that
must be purchased through the studio. Prices vary depending on which items are needed for which dances.
These items are purchased in January.
Costumes for Footsteps Dance Theater company dances range from $80-100 apiece. SDT costumes sometimes
cost less than this. This is extremely reasonable for competition costumes, which can range in the multiple
hundreds at other places. At Footsteps, we believe that a lot of creativity and a little sweat equity can go a long
way toward presenting our studio as classy and appropriate onstage in competition! Like with Spring Concert
costumes, we offer a Costume Contract to company families who wish to spread out their costume payments over
4 monthly installments; the first payment is due in November and includes a $15 contract fee.
Props, certain rhinestone jewelry and accessories, and Production costumes are rented from the studio. Prices
vary depending on the items rented, but are still far less than it would cost families to buy all of these items
outright at retail rates.
In February we charge a Company Fee which covers rental of the Ohio Theater studio, where we hold our offsite
rehearsals, and U-Haul rentals/gas to transport props and equipment to/from each competition, and expenses
related to the Company Sleepover. This fee is nominal, around $25-30 per family.
As mentioned earlier, travel and hotel expenses may be involved for out-of-town competitions, conventions,
nationals, and summer intensives. Conventions and summer intensives will also charge tuition, which can vary
greatly depending on the number of days, the venue, and other factors.
Since Company dancers are required to attend 3 in-studio workshops per year, we give Company families a
discount on workshop fees: the normal charge is $15 per workshop, but Company dancers may participate for
$10 each.
Perhaps the largest single Company expense is entry fees for competitions. For group dances including
Production, fees range from $25-35 per person, per dance. Duets and trios range from $30-45 per person, per
dance, and solos range from $70-100 per performance. Nationals fees may be slightly higher. Competition fees
are due approximately 5 weeks prior to each competition.
Because not every family is prepared to spend thousands on their dancer's Company experience, some of our
Company parents have banded together and formed FPO, the Footsteps Parent Organization. This is a non-profit
entity of its own that provides Company families with opportunities to work to earn money that pays for Company
expenses.
Examples of FPO fundraising activities have included concessions at OSU football games, graduation, concerts,
and Clippers games, and selling baked goods, bottled water, and dance trinkets at the Spring Concert.
Participating families have been able to earn hundreds or thousands of dollars for their dancers, depending on
how often they work, and our older teenagers have also participated in FPO activities, earning even more for their
families.
FPO is totally parent-run. It is a financial group only and has no input into how the Footsteps Dance Theater
Company is run, how much Company events and items cost, or what events FDT attends. Membership in FPO is
mandatory for all Company families due to IRS regulations. There is a reasonable membership fee for joining FPO,
which covers operating expenses such as maintaining a bank account, copying paperwork, etc.
Details about FPO involvement are explained at the annual Company Parents Meeting, which is held in early May
to inform interested families about the Company Program and schedule for the coming year. If you are interested
in learning more about FPO, please contact our office, and we will put you in touch with the parents who head FPO.
